Hey all,

My casio calculator has been stuck at the message, updating OS for over a week now. I've tried many things to get it solved (restarting, battery switch, trying to connect with the computer) but it just returns to the updating OS screen.

Is there anything I can further do to try and solve this? Is there some kind of button combination I can press?

I hope you guys can help me further.

Cheers!

Pol

(edit: I meant to say that it will not connect to the computer since it keeps being stuck on updating OS)

(Edit edit: completely the wrong topic, apologies for that)

Try to send a operating system with some software. I don't have this model, but I caused an error in my fx-9750GII, pressing a lot of keys, and then sending the fx-9860GII OS with a software.

And in TI calcs is the same, you have to connect it and send the OS

When the calculator is showing the text "Updating OS..." directly after pressing RESTART on the back, then there is probably some OS checksum error.

"Updating OS..." means the calculator is awaiting a new OS update file received via USB from a PC.
You can download Casio's update program at http://edu.casio.com / Download Resources / Graphic Models / Accept / fx-CG series

Yet, if there is a flash memory issue, installing a new OS will not fix this.

I tried this, but my calculator does not connect to my computer, since I cant access the menu anymore. This means that i'm unable to get the ''connection'' up between calculator and computer.

And indeed as you said, the calculator instantly jumps back to updating new OS, after restart or battery change.

OS update mode works differently than the usual calculator<->PC connection. You will not see a removable media icon appear on your PC.

You have to install and run Casio's update program on the PC and this program will then connect to the attached calculator showing the text "Updating OS...". The same text will appear when you start OS update mode via the SYSTEM menu on the calculator.

I tried as you advised, by running the program while following the steps of the installer. My calculator does not seem to react to the update, and the updater on PC tells that the update has failed.

Is there anything else that I can do? I'm sure the calculator hasnt frozen, since the spinning wheel does keep moving on the calculator.

You could try some other USB cable or a different PC.
There is also another OS update mode included in the boot code area of the calculator.

In order to enable it follow these steps:
- turn the calculator off or ignore this step if it cannot be turned off
- press the keys F2+4+AC/on+ RESTART at the same time (use both hands and a pencil)
- release the RESTART button after about two seconds
- continue pressing F2+4+AC/on for about three seconds
- release all keys and the display should stay black
- if you see a white display and the calculator starts booting, then repeat all the steps
- now, the screen is black but the calculator is awaiting some additional key inputs...
- press the key 9 for about two seconds and then release it
- press the key × (multiplication symbol) for about two seconds and then release it
- the display should turn on and you should see the text "OS ERROR Please update OS."

Blame Casio for this innovative key combination...

Now connect the USB cable and proceed with Casio's update program on the PC.
Please note that this "OS ERROR" update mode powers the device off after 60 seconds of inactivity.
If this happens you have to reapply the key combination.

@teamFX,

I followed the steps, and do get the display which you indicated I should see.

But after using the program, it still tells me that the  update failed.

To make some things clear:

I'm using the updater: fx-CG Series OS Ver.2.02 Update.exe

My usb cable has 3 things, a Jack 3.5mm (I think, looks like normal headphones jack), a general USB, and a small half usb thing which can be put in the calculator. I implemented the jack and the usb in my computer, and implemented the half usb in the calculator (which fits).

I still see no indication on either the computer or the calculator that the update is proceeding.

A new Casio fx-CG20 comes with an ordinary USB type-A to Mini-B cable similar to this one:
https://www.amazon.c...e/dp/B00NH13S44

Maybe you should use this USB cable as there seem to be some issues with your current cable.

You could also try to connect your cable to a different USB port on your PC.

I implemented the jack and the usb in my computer, and implemented the half usb in the calculator (which fits).

I reckon, you should not connect the 3pin connector to your PC - only use USB.

Your cable may require a special driver to be installed. Does Windows recognize your cable? Does it work with other devices?

Tried to use the various different USB ports, to no avail, will try a different device later.

I dont think Windows recognizes the cable (in device manager), is there any way to check, both on recognition and drivers?

The cable looks the same as the one you linked, the cable has never been used before, which would perhaps indicate it had been broken from the start.

Well, I thought you have some weird USB adapter cable with a lot of different ports in it. Such a cable may need a special Windows driver.
I don't know what is causing your issues but I don't think the calculator has a malfunctioning USB port.

Connect another device with a Mini-B USB port and see if it works.

I have a similar problem. I put 4 AAA batteries in (it had not been used for 2 months). It opens the Message Language screen with Cursor at English and an ‘Hello’ showing.

There are 2 F keys (F1 for Select and F6 for next.

none of the keys on the calculator will respond, not even ⬆︎↓ cursor control keys.

I’ve tried different batteries and a total reset - did nothing but took me back to the same scree.

Does this FX-CG20 have a backup coin battery?
