my guess is that you can't. you can probably get 18*x^4*z^4
(simplified with MatLab)

Hello, in fact it is strange, if you try without the ^1/2 it works fine.
Put this on the bugs section

Ich verstehe das nicht,
ich tippe: (36*x^4*z^4)^1/2
und als Ergebnis kommt: 18*x^4*z^4

das habe ich mit ClassPad ausgerechnet.

English:

I do not understand that,
I tap: (36*x^4*z^4)^1/2
and as result comes:18*x^4*z^4

I calculated that with ClassPad.

:D

you are doing (x^1)/2 and not x^(1/2) :P

you can't simplify (x^4)^(0.5) in (x^2) :

i^4 = 1
(-i)^4 = 1
1^4 = 1
(-1)^4 = 1

and 1^0.5 = 1

but :
i^2 = -1
(-i)^2 = -1
1^2 = 1
(-1)^2 = 1

Hi. :)
Change the ClassPad setting to Real.
Type: (36x^4z^4)^(1/2)
And the result: 6x^2z^2. ^_^

I'm sory if i led you to mistake, i saw the error you and i did, Overlord is right you were doing (...^1)/2 and not (...)^(1/2), and because i did copy/paste into matlab and maple id did not see the error until i tried it in my calculator (hp49, rpn mode).

Could you tell us what you are trying to get ??
You could try (m^(1/2)-1)/(m^(1/2)+1)
maybe that is the problem, i got (m+1-2*sqrt(m))/(m-1) but i don't know if this is what you are trying to get

Has i said above using HP49G but you should be able to do it with your calc with the correct modes set. just spend a little time reading the manual and playing around with your calc solving simple problems to get to know your calc better, but anyway other people at this forum will certainly be able to tell you how to do it.
