Hello..... Hope someone is reading this..... This is my first time starting a thread....

Hey guys, some of my friends and I wanna start an OFFICIAL IRC (Internet Relay Chat) for Casio calculators. Seeing that people with TI calculators have their own IRC, could we have our own for Casio? Having an IRC allows a way of some sort of instant chat messaging so people could ask questions and get answers right away. However, we have thought up of some problems with this:

* What would happen to this forum? We'll all love casiocalc.org.... Could it perhaps save bandwith on this website or space?

* Where are we gonna host this IRC? EFnet or some other server?

* Who is going to operate it? Also managing bots, scripts and other stuff....

We would like to hear people's thoughts on having an IRC. Is it a good idea or a bad one?

We had one some time ago, it was so lonely.
Anyway i think it would be nice, hope you will have enough support for this.

Im not sure but i think this forum started from an IRC channel. Maybe someday killer, mohamed, maybe ross could tell more about this.

How long ago was this IRC? I think times have changed and there are more people who want to have an IRC for our calculators. Anyway, I'm glad you think it's a good idea. I would operate an IRC, but me and my friends can't hold the channel all day. Get's taken over and.....

The irc channel (i think the name was "UCF") was turned off about 2 years ago, maybe a bit more.

Most of people like to chat using in excess silly smillies and dont like IRC. IRC its most for geeks. The same happen to other irc channels like the linuxforum one. Nice guys and nice channel, but just a little number of visitors.

IRC isn't a bad thing but from what i think i see the forum is better.
The thing is, the people that know what they are saying and that can really help can't be online 24/7 and the number of users isn't that big so i think the forum is better, also if someone is smart enough he/she can search the forum before asking a question and the forum can act as a knowledge base.
The IRC would be good to exchange ideas and for quick doubts.
Don't get me wrong, i think it would be a good thing but very hard to maintain.

Ok, I got an IRC set up for us. It's at irc.afternet.org on channel #casiocalc. This channel will always run forever (unless the AfterNet server shuts down or something)! X3 will also help me operate this channel FOREVER! :D I hope people will spread this news and will encourage new people to learn about Casio calculators. There are just a few things I ask when you join in the channel though:

1. Please don't use profanity and don't make threats. Please make people feel comfortable. If a TI calc user comes on and starts babbling and makes people feel uncomfortable, an operator will kick them off.
2. No virus and spyware uploading and spreading.
3. No trying to take over the channel. X3 will maintain the channel.
4. Last, please enjoy you're stay. If you like it, please tell me.

Don't have an IRC client? No problem! Try using this JavaScript (Copy and paste it into a text file, save it as a HTML, and open it). If you want to use an IRC client, I suggest Visual IRC (it's free and easy to use).

<html>
<script src="http://www.afternet.org/chat/afterjavachat.js" type="text/javascript">
</script>
<script type="text/javascript">
after_nickname = 'user';
after_showchan = 'false';
after_useinfo  = 'false';
after_smileys  = 'false';
after_bgimage  = 'false';
after_channel  = '#casiocalc';
after_width	= '90%';
after_height   = '400';
after_webchat();
</script>
</html>

I hope an Admin, could integrate this feature into this site. But oh well.....
If you have any comments or suggestions, post them here. I'll be glad to hear them. :D

Ok, I'm back! :D

Has anyone tried out the IRC? Tell me what you think about? Give me feedback and comments. Well, now there is an easy way to get into the IRC without installing any software (you need a web browser that supports JavaScript). Click on this link to join the IRC: http://www.afternet....chan=#casiocalc

You can use any username you want. Just type in a username and connect! :lol:

as for "you can use any username you want":

Could you please do something so that the usernames of
the admins are reserved to them, so that no abuse is possible.

This would be verry kind. I don't use IRC at all, so you could lock my
username. The other (important) users to "lock" would be

2072
betoe
Andy.Davies
CrimsonCasio
Mohamed

Thanks!

Hmmm.... what you can do is have the admins email me or PM theire IP addresses to me. If I see any of your names in the user list, I can check it with your IP address. If it's not the same, I'll ban them from the channel. :angry:

Nevermind, I found out another way to block users that have the same usernames. Don't worry, if X3 or me see one, we'll remove them.

thanks a lot. IPs are problematic, since my DSL connection needs to reconnect every 24h and so I could get a new one then ...

You should check out the IRC. If not could you encourage other people to join it?

Really alias4399? When are you on?

Are you sure you're connecting to the right channel? To check please tell me what the current Topic of the IRC is.

To make the IRC more popular, they could integrate an interface to the channel on this site, but oh well....

Yup, I think its the right channel.. X3 is there, and the topic is 'Welcome to Casio calculators'

I don't use Miranda IM, but is it good?

By the way, I wish I could have HTML support. Then this little piece of code will indicate to other people if I'm online on the IRC:

<a href="http://www.afternet....el=#casiocalcs" ><img border=0 src="http://www.afternet....ucalc&small=1"> </a>

You can setup your own indicater by registering with afternet.org.

Also if anyone else wants to be an operator of this IRC, please tell me and I'll give you operator priveleges. :D

Well, dynamic pages have been disabled for security reasons. We are sorry but I don't think I can enable it.

As for Miranda: It is a fantastic IM, but the IRC function does not seem to work in the new version ...
I can't see the text I type and the text that is posted in the chatroom. So sorry if it seemed as if
a lunatic was in there yesterday ;)

As for the Spanish speaking people on the thread: Ucf Little Corner About Afx/cfx/fx For Spanish Talking People, I was going to tell them they could make a shedule and talk on the IRC but the thread was locked. Now that I got a wepage running, using the IRC is a snap! Just go to my Casio Graphing Calculator section here: http://kucomp.4000we.../graphcalcs.htm, type in a name you want to use in the box where it say's Nickname, and click Continue and you're on. You don't even need to install any software. People should bookmark that page...

This Google translation better be good....
Incluso no necesitas instalar ning?n software. La gente debe bookmark esa p?gina?
