Fx-9860g Slim Has A Head Injury

Can't remember the exact problem I was working on, I was in Symbolix, but my feeling was I was searching for the limit of the highest number the calc could compute. Either factorials, decimal powers of base 10, factors of a huge number, or something like that. I kept trying larger and larger numbers.
Seriously, don't do this on yours, but I found an expression, that when I hit EXE, it blinked a couple of times, and then died.
Not really dead, the reset button on the back will bring up the big word CASIO, and sometimes I can get the menu, but then it just goes back in a coma.
Tried removing the batteries for a week, a month, several months. Put the batteries back in, pushed the reset button, same thing.
Then I searched this site and found a diagnostic mode. OPTN + EXP + AC/on. Hey! it stays on, better then just closing its eyes immediately... of course its now stuck on that "factory Use Only!" screen. It says to press EXIT, but that doesn't do anything. No button seems to get it to operate. Pushing the reset will put it back into coma.
Any ideas? Can I use this diagnostic mode to diagnose my old friend?

Not sure if this will help, but I have an application called Reckon go into something similar, the screen just went blank and I couldn't get out if it.
I noticed the screen flicker, when I pressed and got out of it by pressing very quicly followed by MENU' />. I had to do it 5-10 times before hitting the magic timing to get out of the loop.
I have not idea on the approprate way to deal with resilient programming bugs like this.
Good luck !

Tried that, and flashes back to some simple calcs in Linear mode of Run/Mat. Then goes back to sleep. Tried the AC/On then Menu buttons at different speeds several times. Still stuck...
Anyway to short-out, and re-boot, or perhaps change OS to the new OS2.00 with this thing?

You have an excellent excuse to upgrade ... go for it :-)
I sometimes use the fx-6890G emulator, but keep missing the OS 2.0 features (Especialy the statistics improvements).

Yes, lets upgrade this!
How do I get the fx-9860G slim to invoke the "OSUpdate" screen? Some posts suggest there is a hole to the right of the P button. What size drill bit do I use? (my slim calcs don't have an extra hole) I tried shorting with a paperclip, that is quickly moving it in to both battery terminals after turning it on. Tried both sides, a small spark occurs when I short out the ends closest to the AC/On button, which is opposite the P button. (I have had several years of electronics in college, perhaps I should open up the back...)
Can't seem to get the ball started. Any suggestions?

Ok, so you plugged in the usb-cable and it didn't jump to the screen automaticly?
Unscrewing the calc to trip a hidden button or jumper sounds easier to me than drilling a hole in the blind

If not, then open your device and look for P104 (Picture taken from an fx-9860GII SD):The primary emergency OS update can be triggered by simultaneously holding down F2' /> , 4' /> and while pressing the RESTART button.
Release every button. The calc should show a blank display now. Finally press 9' /> and ×' /> consecutively.
And close it while the calculator is ON. This should enter OS update mode too.
Unfortunately, I don't know how to do this tricky task on an fx-9860G Slim.
I did it this way for the fx-9750GII (Note, the above key combo works on this device!):
If the calculator cannot be turned on or freezes instantly after doing so, press the P/Restart button while P104 is closed. This is, however, an almost impossible task to do by hand! So better you take some piece of aluminum foil or the like and stick it on P104 - or drill a hole in the calculator's back cover.
A note from Simon:
The hole to access the OS update contacts of the Slim is hidden behind a piece of black adhesive tape 10mm N; 7mm W of the P button (below the battery cover).

The 6 button combo key sequence didn't work, so I opened it up.
Would attach the photo now, but can't figure it out, not as easy as email...
Anyway, printed circuit board is slightly different, found the test points, P104. I removed the p-button component from the back cover, and stuck it on the test points, SW101. The combination of P104 and SW101 did not work. However, holding down P104 and pressing the AC/On did get it to go into OSupdate mode.
Seems to work, but has erased all programs (what I wanted...), erased graph equations, but keep all old e-act files.
Thanks, now I have a old Slim2.00 and a new Slim1.11

when I plug it in, it doesn't work.
I tried, but there's no way it'll connect with my computer.
What should I do.
I want my summary on it (made it with emulator) because I need it tomorrow.
Seriously, if I didn't need that stupid thing so badly, I'd probably already killed it myself.
Some help?
Xx

1. To connect your fx-9860G, you need to have FA-124 application (available on CD comes with the calc.) installed.
2. When you connected the calc. to PC with cable, be sure cable type was set correctly on your calc. (USB or 3pin?).
3. On the calc's 'link' mode, be sure you issue the 'RECEIVE' command.
4. In FA-124 window, Click connect button (first one on toolbar) to begin connection.
5. Be sure the correct memory was selected (Main or Storage--these are 2 toggle button rightmost on toolbar).
