I think CASIO's NEW OS FOR THE CLASSPAD NEED TO BE THE BEST BECAUSE THE COMPETENCE ARRIVE...

Upcoming Qonos Scientific PDA

Qonos is a project being developed by Hydrix, an embedded hardware and software innovation company based in Melbourne, Australia, founded in 2002 by former HP Australian Calculator Operation employees, including Jean-Yves Avenard and Gerald Squelart (also of Meta Kernel fame).

The below image is a CAD rendering of a possible industrial design for Qonos:

eCos, running in 512KB SRAM and providing one month of battery life
<{GNULINUX}>, running in 64MB of SDRAM and providing considerably more than a day of battery life

Other software:
Emulation of both the HP 49G and the TI-89
Advanced math software: Gnuplot, Giac/Xcas (supposedly better than Maple), MathsExplorer
PDA software: calendar, tasks, notes, time management
Datalogging capabilities

Intel PXA 263 XScale processor, running at 400 MHz
32MB of on-chip flash memory
32-bit data bus

Display:
Grayscale 3" 320x240
Full support already exists for a color screen to be offered at a later date

Other hardware:
Mono speaker and microphone
Stereo audio input and ouput ports
Keyboard with tactile feedback designed for fast, accurate data entry
Compact Flash Type II slot
SDIO slot
IrDA port
USB client and host ports, supporting external keyboards, webcams, and other devices

What makes a calculator a calculator? I would call it a calculator because it is designed to do math and it has a dedicated calculator keyboard. I think it might have a low powered mode where it runs slower but has a longer battery life (like a calculator) and a high powered mode where it runs at full speed but drains the batteries quickly (like a PDA).

Personally, I'd like to see a rechargeable battery and a power management system that automatically drops to low power mode when the batteries are low. I would also hope it could be off for months and still have enough energy to turn on. The one thing I hate about a PDA is trying to turn it on and discovering the batteries are dead after only a week or two off the charger.

This will be very interesting to see when it is released. It has a color screen and a fast CPU, but it doesn't look like it has pen input. :( It is also a high priced machine. I would expect the price to be at least $350, so it costs more than twice the ClassPad.

The hardware is only as good as the software that runs on it... so we'll have to wait and see... but it does look pretty cool. :D

Yes looks pretty cool but the problem is that i doubt someone can use it on an exam. It would be a nice toy for home use :D.

Crimson is right, i remember i had saw a post about it in this forum.

One little useless addition though, SoftCalc, it has a stylus. :)

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I didn't see this in the specs.

Mono speaker and microphone
Stereo audio input and ouput ports
Keyboard with tactile feedback designed for fast, accurate data entry
Compact Flash Type II slot
SDIO slot
IrDA port
USB client and host ports, supporting external keyboards, webcams, and other devices

Since it is a USB host and is running <{GNULINUX}> I'm sure it can accept many input devices though.

I Agree with softcalc, "The hardware is only as good as the software that runs on it". I have a HP720 HPC and it could be a perfect Calculator and More but, i couldnt find software that meet my engineering needs (A MAPLE Windows CE Version?? :lol2: ), anyway..the HPC's are almost dead...just pocket PC are still running.
