That's not really a fair comparison.

The Ti89 is vastly superior to the CFX9850 in pretty much all respects.
It is also much more expensive.

The Ti has a full CAS system (algebraic operations), powerful graph capabilities, and a heap of add-in programs available (for things such as geometry, finance, etc).

The only thing some would claim to better on the 9850 would be it's colour screen... This however really serves no useful purpose, and the contrast of it is far weaker than that of most black/white screens. The Ti89 also has a much higher resolution, and natural print of expressions entered.

A more appropriate comparison would be with the Classpad 300, which I believe there are threads on already in the classpad forums.

If you ask because you might buy a TI-89 you might want to look on eBay for a TI-89 that is not a Titanium edition. All that is sold in stores now is the Titanium edition. It is identical to the older TI-89 except that it has a USB connection and more storage memory. The TI-89's 800kb of storage memory should be very adequate for almost anyone. The Titanium models come with 16 programs already loaded but 14 or 15 of these can be downloaded from TI's website for free and loaded on any TI-89. So, if price is a concern buy an older TI-89 and get the same functionality for $50 to $60 less.

I bought my Classpad for $97.50, on sale, and it's superior to the ti-89 titanium (many of my friends have ti-89 titanium)...as soon as some nice addins are made...i also have a cfx-9850gb+, and its a very good, cheap calculator, and it has helped me a lot in school/for fun
for functionality, the 89 is currently better than any other, but the CP should catch up (and surpass, i hope) the 89 soon enough

for a Ti vs Ti question let me point you to www.maxcoderz.com (beware, they can be a little rude sometimes) and dysfunction.earthforge.com, there are people at both these places that can tell you more than you ever wanted to know about Ti's :)

@TacoFred

for functionality, the 89 is currently better than any other

have you considered HP49G+ as an option ?
It is already very powerfull and has potential that none of the TI's have.

The Titanium is identical to the earlier models except the memory and the USB connection.

From what I understand, maxcoderz deals mostly with the TI-73 through TI-86 family which is completley different from the TI-89 family. They may be able to help you like Crimson said but I don't think this group is their focus.

Ti = assymbly/c = AWESOME COOL GAMES
9850 = casiobasic = hermets address book

Ti >> 9850
9850 << abacus

and ppl always talkin about 9850, when in actual fact most ppl will now have fx 9750G plus, as this is the one thats being crammed into secondary schools everywhere. Its not colour, but is basically the same, wif a new contempory design(not a brick).
So goodbye branding those calcs as CFX's as their not colour, so there just FX's, but we cant have that either as the fx1.0 and 2.0 use that branding.
So it should now be 9750, more common than 9850.
9850 is the old generation, in wif the new, bye bye 9850.

9750G came out before the 9850, making the 9750 the older generation, but still cheaper

In germany we used to get:

CFX 9850 (non- coloured. The C doesn't seem to indicate Color)

then the CFX 9850 GB
then we got the CFX 9850 GB Plus
and since 2 years the new pupils get the CFX 9850GB+ WE
(since this is the latest model by casio in the CFX series) the

9750 does have fewer functions as the number indicates something like the feature counte (mathematical) and the other items (like GB) indicate the color displays or advanced things like the equation solver.

I think the + indicates the equation solver and some other bug fixes.
It has fewer main functions nonetheless. (maybe matrix or list, I don't know ...)

The numbering is not a question of new or old but of the amount of functions of the calc.

I think the best part of the Ti-89 is the availability of a program called "Calculus Made Easy".... Don't flame me...! It's not just to get the quick answer and use it.... It shows the steps needed to get the answer as well. It's not different than using a tutor to help you with your homework... Well actually it is because you can keep it by your side for use whenever you want. I would reccommend the ti-89! and the app.

o yeah also the FX-9860 DOESNT have a colour screen which shows that the 9850 screen colour was useless (and was VERY inconvienient in typing code)
