Well, because you took the batteries out and tried again (and it even worked a little), it makes me think that it is a hardware problem. I personally can't give you any hints other than if it still under warrenty, take it to Casio.

try initializing it with the system menu, if that fails send it to casio for repairs.

I had this problem. I sent the calculator in and they told
me that it was a hardware problem. In fact the soldering of the
flash chip was no too good and so they had to do it again.

Since then the calc ran fine.

Just send it in if you have still guarantee. It is the best way. Do only try to solder it yourself if you know what you#re doing. You'll loose warranty and if you fail even the calc ...

I think you can search on google! Maybe the constructor of the chip gives information about :)

I don't know exactly..

they just said the re-soldered some things and I assume that it was the flash.

if you want to initialize it you have to goe to the hidden test menu and do the "Whole Flash" Flash Test.

On next restart it shows an error (DATA ERROR 80 i believe) and then the flash will be initialized on pressing enter.

This is due to the fact that drive A (system) hast to be copied back from ROM for the calc to work.

Just try it :D

If you're looking for a doc of the chip you could try http://www.chipdocs.org, too, seems they have nearly everything there :) (I found this page once ago when looking for some descriptions of the CFX 9850GB +'s RAM chip)

The flash is made by Fujitsu and is MBM29LV800TA-70/-90 or MBM29LV800BA-70/-90

Lol, to solder those really small components you're gonna either gonna need some really good stable hands with some really good eyes with a magnifying glass (or maybe even a microscope), or you gonna need to buy a thousand dollar heat reflow oven...

You may use an SMD Rework soldering station which utilizes a hot air out of a hand piece, only align the chip-pins to the board and apply hot air from the hand piece; the pins will be soldered to the board. You have to use a sort of soldering flux for clean soldering.
In my region I bought a small "made in china" unit for $51 including the flux, its very handy and reliable.

mine is similar to the one in the link; but with one digital display.

It's not worth it to me to buy a whole new kit that will cost about $100 after all is said and done. I think I'll get the HP50g. What do you all think? Whats the 3rd party apps like for it? And does it have a tutor like program (the reason i love the (a)fx)?

Its up to you, I thought you may be interested in HW modification so a soldering station may be very handy.
I haven?t tried HP50g; maybe some one will give you an advice.
Regards.

You can try the HP50g with its SDK, which includes an emulator. You can find it here : http://www.debug4x.com/

Cool, don't know however if the AFX still looks good now these days.

What I'm more concerned about is functionality. The AFX does everything I need it to, and most importantly, it has tutor and cas, and nobody knows it, so it isn't banned from exams and stuff, lol.
