i don't know why but when my calculator had low batteries it didn't show the message but only hesitated to turn on. Is this a bug? How low does a battery usually go before it displays this message? Mine was about 1.35.

Don't know the voltage at which it gives you a warning..
however, in my experience, it warns you long before the batteries need to be changed (can usually use my calc for quite a while after recieving the first warning)

hmm, I have that model and it normally gives a warning message every time you press menu.

My 9850BG+ warns me too
but the AFX doesn't! It simply turns of when I send sth to the flash
and the battery is (nearly) empty. Even test mode doesn't say.
Btw @glra2222:
Press A/B/C + F6 +AC/ON simultaneous to turn on your calc and then
press the key for DET. It should show you the battery state.
to exit choose 0 (RESET) form the main menu and press NO
