Has anyone heard any rumors about whether or not Casio will release an 'FX-9860GII Slim' ? I like the compact form of the slim and the built-in manual so I'd prefer the Slim model over the conventional GII. I know you can update the FX-9860G Slim to OS 2.0 but I've heard that this 'update' does not include ALL features of a GII machine with OS 2.0 out-of-the-box. I did email Casio regarding a possible GII Slim model but they couldn't tell me one way or the other. They said to watch Casio's homepage. If the rumor-mill says it's in the works, I'll wait for the release of a possible GII Slim. If it's out of the question, I'll settle for the G Slim version with a 2.0 update. Wish the slim came with the SD slot but it's got plenty of memory onboard so I'll be happy there.

Why should they release GII Slim? It already has a backlit display.
And maybe GII firmware can be modified to work o31/2n Slim or you ask Casio to make it available.

Right, the backlight... well, that's not too much of a concern either way for me. If I knew for sure the FX-9860G Slim updated to OS 2.0 has all of the functionality of the 9860GII models then I'd have already gotten one. Could someone clear up the rumor then that the OS 2.0 update for the 9860G Slim is not a 'full' version of OS 2.0 that you get in the 9860GII models? That would pretty much 'dead-end' the Slim models and I wouldn't want to see that. Maybe the price difference between the conventional and slim models is a factor in not releasing an FX-9860GII Slim along with the other GII's ?

Okay, I see what you're saying. The only real hardware difference is the backlight so there's no need to release a GII Slim. That would make sense. Thanks for the post. Also, the 9860GII's are no faster really than the 9860G models. I like the better contrast and cleaner display of the 9860G Slim anyway... I toyed with one a bit at a local Staples. The programming speed is very FAST even compared to my high-end TI and HP models - that was the draw for me anyway, along with the straight-forward and sensible design of Casio's operating systems.

Thanks Mardoxx, that's the catch I recall reading about and I was able to
Google the rest. Disappointing though... and just about ridiculous to leave
out such basic functionality.

I like the speed of the 9860G line and I really like the Slim model. The icing
on the cake was the OS 2.0 update with at least basic CAS functionality. I
was just about convinced into getting the Slim until I heard about the some-
what crippled OS 2.0 for it. I'll pass until they get that fixed and, given their
past record of listening to their customers, I have no doubt that they'll fix it
one way or another.

The TI and HP that I use now are more expensive and I use them at home.
The Casio 9860G Slim, with the lower price tag, smaller size, and the protected
screen, would be ideal for a work calc. I'll bet I'm not the only one who thinks
that way.
