good games take time, planning, brainstorming, ect. plus some people do these things faster than others. heck, I've been working on my RPG for 5 years, were as TET took 2 days. If you can make a good game fast then congrads to you the speed award isn't for how fast you finish. take your time, make a quality game... if you feel confident about a game you made in 2 weeks then you dont have to worry about people using up the full time.

I have to say that 2 weeks and below will not be considered since some people wont even see the announcement durring that time.

4 or 5 months are really good but only for the ASM/C category, they could do very good games but in basic with 2 months is sufficient. There is an limiting on basic: the calc. need to check the state of the keys and its very slow. The basics games will be less complex than the ASM/C and by the way they need less time.

final decision: the contest will last for 5 months from today (August 1st) officially ending on new years day, all games must have been submitted to judges by that time. people in the BASIC catagory may not need the extra time but we want to anounce and release all the new games at once, kind of as a New Years special. The games will be released that day but the final judging may not be finished immediately, therefore you can preview the entries before seeing the results, you can even speculate on the winners.

is everyone happy with this?

it doesnt take long to pump out a basic game but to make it have NO errors and tweak it to run faster that takes some time looking over your code.

let's not be MS here and just release crap because we feel like it (windows ME)

Sorry, but I will moan a bit.
I think that people rarely spent more than 3 months on a single ASM/C project (commonly 2 months)
moreover many people have holidays or other free time now so they have more time to program.
After the 1st month people will be quite bored with it and give up or forget about it.
I strongly suggest shorter period to motivate people and prevent then from forgetting it
(I am sure that many people's joy and excitement will be zero after 2nd month).
For me 5 months is too long - I would suspend what I am doing, because I need max 1.5 months.

For BASIC programs 1 month is totally enough.

So please every participant declare your finish time.
Roeoender.

PS.
To CrimsonCasio - Just as you I am making an RPG, and I am making it for more than a year but this is an exception.

if everyone declares that they are finished (and gets in their programs) we will end the contest sooner, but it will not go over 5 months. feel free to turn your game in when ever you want, but do not feel rushed. remember this is the First competition, we will learn from this one and be able to make future ones better.

about RPG: I know, I am eagerly awaiting it. are you shooting for a release date yet?

I already voted for 3 months, and I don't know where did the idea of 5 months come from, the last option in the poll is 4 months.

I agree with Roe, I think we could make it three or two and a half, and if competitors needed more time then we could extend it.
We don't want anyone to get bored or suspend his work at the game!

It should be with two deathlines: for the basic category about 2 or 3 months (some members of UCN come to the website eventually) and about 3 or 4 months for ASM/C, with this the members will not lose the interest for the competition.

to casiokingdom: yes there should be more than 1 BASIC judge but none of the admin have voluntered.

will they be material?

CrimsonCasio about shorter BASIC competition:

the only problem I have with that is that I dont want anyone to know what the prizes are untill the very end.

I don't think that this is a big problem - simply announce the results earlier and give prizes when the later ASM/C competition ends.

On AFX you can program in machine code - Assembler (that is run by the hardware not interpreted as BASIC program), which sometimes means that things run more than 10000% faster- graphics for instance (not a joke I calculated it when released my "The Race" game). On AFX you have "conventional" memory about 60Kb for .exe programs, 144Kb of normal user memory and 768Kb (or so) of Flash.
Better speed, more memory gives more possibilities.
For example in my unfinished RPG I have 128+ 8x8 sprites, 30 16x16 sprites with transparency, about 10 full screen bitmaps, and 300x300 world map + 5 cities that are 100+x100+ maps too ( I will use 2 or 3 drives, exec are compressed with UPX, maps compressed with my own algorithm).
So you can see that you can program endlessly.
Roeoender.

No wonder the AFX graphics look so much better.

CFX graphics are so basic and boring. There isn't enough mem to store many picture files.

However, I thought the cfx models are better. Are cfx better for math etc?

i don't mind getting a AFX
How much are they in US dollars or Aust dollars?

Your game sounds promising. Good luck

You can get a new AFX for ~80 US$

The AFX have the same software as the CFX plus some advanced features. (Clipboard, 1MB Flash / 256KB used by system / 256 KB Ram (144KB for Basic files) customizable main menu, a 80186 CPU (NEC V30MX)
additional algebra program ,tutorial program etc ... it's worth it's price!

You have to look at the casio site before buying a calc.

In germany it is not in all countries allowed to use calcs with CAS in schools.
In bavaria you aren't even allowed to use graphic calcs (like CFX). (Die spinnen die Bayern!!)
