Prizm fx-CG50 - Result VS PC calc

Best Answer MJim , 16 January 2020 - 03:03 AM

Both of the answers are equivalent, it is just a different way to display results.

If you are familiar with powers, this I think is called "exponent form":

10-3 = 1/103 = 1/1000

so:

6.216216216 x10-3 = 6.216216216 /103 = 6.216216216 /1000 = 0.006216216216

Normally the fx-CG50 is limited to 10 digits, so you can end up losing some digits of accuracy depending on the way the answer is displayed.  In this case it appears you lose just one digit of accuracy switching to the other form on the fx-CG50.  You can see this by changing the default number format from Norm1 to Norm2 by doing the following:

1) ShiftMENU

2) Scroll to the Display option in the menu by pressing (press "up" on the navigation button twice)

3) F4 to toggle between Norm1 and Norm2 (Norm1 is the default, so Norm2 will give you the PC version)

When dealing with very small numbers Norm1 is ideal, since any zeros in front of the result don't give you any useful information.  For example:

Norm1

1/777777777 = 1.285714287 x10-9

Norm2

1/777777777 = 0.00000000128

In the case of Norm2 we only get the first 3 digits, "128" where for Norm1 we get 10 digits, "1285714287" so depending on the answer, you can get better accuracy on the fx-CG50 by using this "exponent form".

So on the problem 2300/370000 on CG50 I get

6.216216216x10-3

On computer I get:

0.0062162162162162

what does mean the x10-3
