Actually you only have to answer the first question. Could you set up the forum so that you could see when a topic was started before you go in and see the time of the first post. I think this would be helpful to the forum.

Exactly like qwerty said, just keep the mouse cursor a second or two over the link and it will tell you. 
Anyway, I use the "View New Posts" option, I rarely do go looking in the menus.
