the manual says that 28KB can be used, but I don't know what the maual of the old casio cfx9850gb+ says.

oh, well. that 2KB's don't make a huge difference for me.

They probably haven't changed the size of the RAM chip.. would be very strange

These 2kb less probably means the restructered parts of the OS, allocating more for programs, and less for user data (maybe they fixed some bugs, and needed a few more k to run certain apps..)

I DID. i looked on the casio site for australian distributors, i found one. I emailed them and they said the only casio graphics calc available in Australia was the CFX9850. I know this to be wrong, because I have a CFX9850GB+.

I called Casio's australian distributor (the one that distributes to shops, not to the general public) and was told to try 4 stores. I rang 3, with no luck. the fourth i rang didn't have it, but told me the phone number of another store that specialised in calculators. they had it - for $399.95. TOO MUCH.

If i was spending that much, I could get a half-decent second hand Pocket PC which would do everything i needed.

I also noted that EVERY store i rang reccommended that I buy a TI instead. (with the exception of Casio's distributor). One store I asked about their range of TIs and found they stocked about 10 TIs. EVeryone knows casio is the best calculator in the world, being the original inventor of the calculator and all, so why are they so hard to get?????

Well you should search for an online shop that sell and send abroad you'll only pay for higher shipping fees...
