Hello all members, we would like to share with you some proposed changes for the UCF.

1) First off, we're resurrecting the #casiocalc IRC. :) Now you can spam there all you want.... just kidding. To access it, you can simply click on the image in my sig below. Please be sure to not abuse and flame other people. IRC is for casual discussion. Trolls are not welcomed also. Please act responsibly, if we see anything (being an imposter, harassing people, saying CASIO sucks hard, etc.) you will be kicked. Currently the only Sysop is me as of now. If my name is on the list and I am not authenticated by X3 as a Sysop, it's likely an imposter.

2) Second, I would like to talk about an Awards system. I was thinking about something like this:
  • Citizenship - Given to those who participate on the forums frequently and have an good effect on the community
  • Benevolence - Given to those who are warmhearted and friendly to others
  • Community Service - Given to those who help integrate and destroy barriers (language translators, etc.)
  • Ultimate Nerd - Given to those who demonstrate their intelligence and wiseness
And then we would have members nominate members by emailing us and vote on the forums. This should be done around the end of the year (December 1 or something) to coincide with the holidays and festive events.

We should also have KAY (Killer App of the Year) award. All programs submitted into the FileShare of this year would be eligible. The community will then vote for their favorite program.

3) And finally, we are going to expand the Free Hot Topics forum to include more categories such as humor, science and technology. Hopefully, this would make this site more cozy. You can view the new subforums now: http://www.casiocalc.org/?showforum=12

So yeah, these are some big changes. We would like to hear your thoughts and look forward to hearing your feedback. B)

Mhmm I might actually idle in the channel. I never understood why there was never an english Casio IRC channel. I remember 4 years ago reading some old topics over here talking about opening one but when I joined there were nobody there.

I'll try to set my IRC client to connect to this additional network. I currently use Dragon-Fire for #omnimaga and Efnet for its emergency channel and someone's ska band

By the way, since IRC is a very old chatting protocol that was mostly popular through the '90s and is not widely used by newer internet users nor the oldest ones, fewer and fewer people are used to this mean of communication. I'll give some advices because I notice that most people just join the channel for a few minutes, then leave:

First, when you join an IRC channel, if there seems to be other users in it, it doesn't necessarly means they are currently here and in some cases, they may not even be human at all, they'll be bots/network services. Most experienced IRC users generally leave their client open 24/7 in order to keep track of any activity in the channels they are in. Because of different timezones and people being extremly busy or sometimes using 10 channels at once or more, it can take up to 24 hours before someone awnsers you if you stay in the channel and while they will awnser you they may be idle themselves, so it may take another while before they awnser you back. Also some people may use alternate nicknames such as Kucalc|away or DJ_Omnimaga|Sleeping to display their status, but some people may still be away even when using their original nicknames, because using alternate nicks is discouraged in some IRC channels.

Secondly, while in the channel, there will be often spam and you may receive spam via private too. Spammers will join the channel, post links to websites or files or try to send you files and then leave (I seen this happen alerady in #casiocalc). DO NOT EVER CLICK THESE LINKS NOR FILES! They are often viruses, malware and trojans. Make sure the link is from a legitimate forum regular before clicking or looks like a legitimate link such as www.google.com or a Youtube URL

What I miss is competitions, why no competitions? K sure there aren't that many programmers, but that makes it easier to win  .
It might get people to make great things, do there best for the competition. It doesn't even have to have any prices. Or give an award as a price.

What I saw at another site is that there community (computergame development) had a point system. You could earn points by winning competitions and uploading games/art. Also number of posts counted a bit for these points. They even had levels as if it were an RPG. Maybe this board isn't active enough for that, but you could try.

And the inactivity on IRC is a circle, if there is no activity people will check less making less activity etc.

PS I don't see the KAY as a competition, by competions I mean things like, make a race game for the fx-9860 in BASIC, or make a classpad SDK puzzle game. Specified stuff.

I like your idea of competitions, Distortion. Instead of "write an awesome game for the 9860" its "write a 2d sidescroller with a constant FPS of 1.03 and no more than 3 enemies onscreen at any one time.." Lol. Okay, that was just for demonstration..

Specific comps make it easier to judge. How do you compare between an awesome adventure game and a racing game, just as good to the player that loves racing games?

I hope you are not referring to my Raiden-X game :profanity:

I think the problem is that competitions are always tailored to programming. I think this is where Distortion's idea would come in: Members can gain points drawing sprite art or solving some math puzzles. I have no idea though how to integrate a point system into this forum. This would be something 2072 would have to do.

I like that.. Tailor to a wider variety of talents. Of course, its up to 2072.
