Casio fxCG10, how would I graph the simple saw-tooth formula:

Sum(Sin(x*a)/a,x,a=1,100) x=value to be evaluated by Sum(f(x),a=1,100)

I have successfully plotted this on: HP50G, TI89T and TInspire CX with little intuitive trouble.

However, I'm stumped on Casio fx-CG10 for some reason....

Any help appreciated. Thanks. Screen shots would be nice.

I'm also on Twitter: @Maverich40

Thanks! -M40

Hello Maverich40 and welcome to UCF! You should introduce yourself.

i think either dynamic graph or table mode should do it...

When graphed on a TI nspire, it looks like this: http://imageshack.us.../cimg1973sl.png
(I also have photo's from other calculators which were directly able to plot this simple function.)

For example, when I try to look up Sum in fx CG10 manual, I do not seem to find much about it thats
really useful? I have the PDF, can someone please diect me to proper page fully describing SUM()

Other approach would be via a Casio BASIC Program which manually plots a formula while in graphics
mode... but it seems other calculators have a more robust Sum() function?

I'm still trying to sort it out. Meanwhile, I shall read up on Dynamic, and Table Mode graphs from CG10 PDF.

If anyone has an actual step-by-step procedure to suggest, please share.

In Catalog there is: Sigma Symbol (, Seq( and Sum, the correct function I need is
Sigma( , it looks like a stiff 'S' kind of, it works in Run-Matrix Mode, but when I put
exactly the same function into a
Y1 = A=1,100, Sigma( sin(A*X)/A )
and attempt to "Draw" it, all it ever reports is "Syntax Error", Exit !!

So there is clearly something still not working.

I've seen examples in PDF that use Integration symbol in Graph Mode,
why not Sigma( summation function?

Thanks.

no, not like that.
try
sigma(sin(ax)/a,a,1,100)

EDIT: i got to my calc and that did not work. And on a sad note, when you open CALC menu from graph, there is no Sigma in the list there. This is indication that it may be prohibited for graphing. Real shame.

AHA! Tricked it.
Wrote sigma epression into fn1 and then plotted fn1. Painfully slow, but works.

nsg, what did you do, _exactly_ ?

When I apply Sigma to y1 = , then press 'Draw' all I get is Syntax Error!!

what is fn1 precisely you said you used?

Thanks...

in Run-Mat mode press <span class=Shift' />,<span class=MENU' />. Make the mode "Linear".

Press EXIT.

Type the equation in quotes ("<equation>").

Press [->]

Press <span class=OPTN' />,<span class=F6' />,<span class=F3' />,<span class=F3' />.

Press <span class=1' />.

Type Fn1 (<span class=OPTN' />,<span class=F6' />,<span class=F1' />,<span class=F3' />) into Y1=.

Press graph.

After some trial-and-error to get through my thick skull, I was able to plot on my CG10 the Sawtooth
Waveform...

Why should this expression have to be stored and applied from a "function memory", instead
of directly from
Y1 = expression

Which makes this difficult to edit and explore on-the-fly ?!?!?!?

Any of my other Calculators let me modify, augment this expression on-the-fly easily directly
from Y1 = line....

At least I got it to work. PAN graph feature is handy, too.

Ta-dah! I may have to take photo's of how I did this! HaHa to ensure I don't forget...

Would be nice to actually experiment with the formula to see what kinds of changes could be done...
oh well...

It's a start.

Photo proves (with help) we can now plot standard Fourier Sawtooth function:

http://img402.images.../cimg2368cs.png

And were able to change Sin() to Cos(), and apply Ln(), Log(), etc.

What is not working now, is the ability to Plot the 1st Derivative of our Sigma(x,a)->fn1 function!

We can not seem to get Graph to accept d/dx(fn1,x),
so if anyone would love a challenge: please see if you can find a way to apply d/dx to fn1, thanks.

"Sigma(sin(a*x)/a,a,1,100)" -> fn1
"d/dx(Sigma(sin(a*x)/a,a,1,100),x)" -> fn2

Graph: Y1=fn1 Success!
Graph: Y1=ln (fn1) Success!
...etc...
Graph: Y1=d/dx(fn1, x) <-- Fails
Graph: Y1=fn2 <-- Also fails

Thanks : -)

Hmm... Since Prizm is not a CAS calc, it can't calculate derivative by itself. You may have to calculate by hand, or write a program for numeric differentiation.

It can calculate derivatives in Run-Mat mode, though...
