Having just spent several days trying to create an account, might I suggest a sticky topic to help people wishing to join this forum.
What finally worked for me was to "force stop" Chrome and delete all open tabs.
I had to do that 3 times to be accepted as human.

My next challenge is to convince the automatic soap dispensers

Hmm I hope it was an isolated case and that not everyone has issues creating accounts. Maybe an admin could check account creation statistics to see how often people make accounts?
