Is it possible to set the fx-85gt plus to deal with hours and minutes?
I cannot find an option to do this, I know that I can set it to hours minutes seconds but it just takes so long to convert it, I find it easier to not use a calculator, entry is OK of course I can enter say 012deg 12.4 mins plus 120deg 52.2mins - the answer should be 133deg 7.6mins, but it gives 133deg 7mins and some seconds which is unsuitable.

It is not possible directly, you need an extra step with substraction and multiplication.
e.g. one possible solution : (A-Int(A))*60
A=12°12.4'+120°52.2'=133°4'36''
Int(A)=133°
(A-Int(A))*60=4.6

That's the problem, either multiply the seconds by 60 or the long way you partially described.
Unfortunately that tends to take longer and more effort than not using a calculator at all.
It's for celestial navigation, and there are dozens of small calculations that need doing, but you need the right value to look up, getting 45deg 34min 36sec - well you can't look that up, you need 45deg 34.6min - once you check this in the tables, you add 7.7min - which you can't do as you lost the original value when you converted the 36sec to 0.6mins - entering it all in again, you do the addition, then need to look another value up on the tables... so the cycle repeats several times for each basic calculation.
I know ddm (degrees, decimal minutes) is a very common usage in navigation, land surveying etc etc.
Can't actually believe the functionality isn't available as standard.

In such case I would recommend using programmable calculator for your tasks.
Having approx. 50 calculators and none of them has such representation.
