Drumroll.... :rockband:

Welcome to the first ever semi-whenever-we-feel-like-it UCF Programming Competition, this competition is designed to award our best programmers for keeping us supplied with tons of cool games and conversational topics!

Heres how it works:
Contestants will be grouped into two catagories, ASM/C and BASIC programmers, each contestant will create a game and submit it to the judges who will then select the top three from each catagory. The winners will all recieve recieve fabulous prizes! (applause  )

To qualify:
All games must be submitted at the same time, when the contest ends; all games must be the work of the contestant, not a friend or otherwise; all games must be started after or within five days before this post, as one of the main purposes of this contest is to inspire new games to be made it would not be fair to accept games that would have already been made regardless; anyone can enter, even if you dont think you will win go ahead and give it a try, it will be good practice and you might learn something.

The Scoring:
the games will be scored in these catagories:
1) Graphics- how cool your game looks
2) Speed- how fast it runs (too fast can be bad)
3) Gameplay- good controls? easy to understand?
4) Replay Value- will I play this again after beating it?
5) Quality- in general how was the game, if it had a storyline was it entertaining?
6) Programming Skill- BASIC ONLY, did you find some new way to do something, if so big points for you!
7) Originallity- is you game another Tetris clone, or is it something unheard of in the world of gaming?

The Judges:
ASM/C- Mohammed,2072
BASIC- CrimsonCasio

The Prizes:
Go here: Prizes

To Enter:
Simpley say so here, and you will be entered.

Deadline:
BASIC: November 1st, ASM/C: December 1st, but earlyer submissions are welcome.

Enjoy everyone!

i'll enter.

Too bad i have already created a number of good games already.
How will you tell if the game was made prior to this comp?

i suggest just a fortnight for programming.
this time space will allow us to create a fun but simple game.

what's your opinion?

its going to be pretty long, the idea is to to the best that you can. ASM and C are programming languages (AFX only).

by the way, the original idea for time was two months.

It would be nice if we had 3 or 4 months. If you have a job or school or both it is kind of hard to make a good quality game in C in 2 months. That is what you want isnt it? Good quality games?

Do you think you could make a game like Super Mario in 1 month? Maybe if you are using BASIC which cant do as much 1 month is enough to make a game but if you want to make a good game (not necessairly complex) in C then 1 month is not enough. Perhaps there should be seperate deadlines for BASIC and ADD-IN programs.

Hello I was blind I haven't seen this thread before, ofcourse I want to participate.
But there is one thing undefined - you say

all games must be the work of the contestant, not a friend or otherwise

But it seems that some people use someone elses code for example - grayscale libraries, memzones etc (As I said many times I don't use someone else's code).
I think it may be a problem to decide a winner.

And please publish a deadline (end time).

Ofcourse I wan't to try in ASM/C category.

TO EVERY ONE:
Come on try to make a game - a good game doesn't have to have stunning graphics (stunning on a calc?)
the orginal idea and fun of the play is what really counts - and it is really not hard to make a game in BASIC.
At least try, this is really good ocasion - stop being an user - start being the creator. :D

Roeoender.

---- Edited from here ----
I think that having so small jury may be dangerous too
(for example I am reading Mohamed's posts from the beginning of the UCN and I might have his psychological portrait  - or atleast know his taste).
I think that our dear jury should incorporate atleast 1 person for each category (but not too many).
And how about French people - are they participating - if so please "suggest" them making their games/docs for competition in English.

I think the diffrent librarys released for people to use are ok, that rule mostly ment dont have a friend do it and then turn it in as your game. however, not using these librarys might lend you some originallity points.

I think you have a point about the judges, I will consult the other admin.

also, anyone can participate, but yes, please provide documentation/games in english.

also, for ASM/C having the source code might be nice.

OK, I really liked what Roe said and am going to repeat it but in a BIG note so all could see it:

TO EVERY ONE:
Come on try to make a game - a good game doesn't have to have stunning graphics (stunning on a calc?)
the orginal idea and fun of the play is what really counts - and it is really not hard to make a game in BASIC.
At least try, this is really good ocasion - stop being an user - start being the creator. :D

Roeoender

I also have some other notes:

1- It would be really nice to have fun and enjoying factor as a category to judge the games, since games are all about fun, arent' they?
Is it ok Crimson?

2- I'm asking all webmasters having CASIO sites to announce about the competition, it might attract a lot of wandering and just watching people, I know of some guys just lurking around looking for new stuff, and if they make programs they don't announce them. OK?
I'm going to announce on my site this afternoon.

3- What about telling the french guys 2072 to come in and submit?

4- Roe: about the deadline, now we have equal votes for 3 & 4 months, so it's almost defined, one or so more votes will completely define things, ok?

5- Hey casiokingdom, you have already expressed your point about the enough time, no need to argue it every post, ok? We're friends, remember! :)

I would like to participate in the ASM/C category if it is allowed when the game exists on the PC but it has
never been written for the Calc (AFX don't know abouth the others [TI]) neither in ASM/C nor in BASIC (or at
least I think so) but it would take me at least 3 months to do. Would this be OK?!?!?

Sure is OK!
It's no problem at all even if you make another Tetris or Snake game, but that would would give you less points, if you make a game never known of, it would give you in only one of the categories (the originality category) more points, but who knows?
If you make a well known clone and make it a real charm, then you might get many other points in other categories.

See? It totally depends on the game, and any game could enter. :)
I'm really excited about the contest and eager to see some good and healthy work. :hammer:

however, not using these librarys might lend you some originallity points.

I'm not really agree with you on that point: if we take my memzone library for exemple: if people use it we are almost sure they won't have bugs using it since it's 100% bugless now (no bugs found since April 25). Whereas if someone re-invente memzone he will certainly have bugs...

So on the contrary if someone re-invent something that already exists we won't had points to his game, but, if ever his game has problems because of the re-invented part we will remove-him points... I think that's normal because contestants should spend time programming their game and not re-doing things already done and working perfectly.

I've just announced the contest of the French forum, I translated the terms and conditions, and told them to sign up on this thread.

By the way for ASM/C games I told them the source code must be at least provided to the judges.

is it allowed to let a friend / family member make the art work? He has no skills in programming so it
has nothing to do with the engine or the idea / behavoiour of the game, nor will he ever program for a
calc or PC. My grandpa is simply a huge deal better in drawing graphics (especially such small ones).

So is it allowed?
